So, in the current day and age, have you seen anyone diseased with Smallpox or Polio. No right? But, in the past the situation was quite different. In olden times, these endemics had costed a lot of lives. So, if I take the example of fighting Polio. You'd probably recall the "Pulse Polio" campaign and its slogan "Two drops of life!" In 2009, about 741 cases of Polio were reported in India. But in 2011, thanks to the immunisation campaign, India was declared polio-free. These days, children are administered with a lot of different vaccines, apart from smallpox and polio. Like for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, Tetanus. And if you'd like to know the Immunization Schedule for children in India, you can click on the link in the description. When a child is born, their immunity lacks strength. Therefore, a lot of vaccines are administered early on. Poor babies. At this point, you might think - What is it in these vaccines that we are spared from acquiring these diseases. So, to know as to how these vaccines work, let us try to better understand our body. You probably know that our body has the ability to fight diseases within. We also call this 'Immunity'. This means that, if a pathogen enters our body, The white blood cells in our body fight the pathogen and save us from the disease. Many times, our white blood cells get rid of these foreign invaders, without us having any clue about it. But, if our body (immunity) is weak and our WBCs are unable to fight the pathogens, or if the pathogen is quite strong, we fall sick. One important thing to note here is that whenever our army of White Blood Cells Fight the Pathogens, and successfully defeat them, some cells are left behind which are called Memory Cells. These Memory Cells remember the same pathogen for faster antibody production in future infections.
